Retailers Gain Further Protections Against Retail Crime

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated that the new law making it a separate criminal offence to attack a shopworker will send a clear message to criminals that "enough is enough" when it comes to stealing from local businesses or abusing shop staff.

This move has been welcomed by independent retailers and those Parliamentarians who have been at the forefront of this campaign.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira said: "For some time, Bira along with the wider retail sector, has been calling for more protection for people who work in shops. We are delighted with this announcement, especially as we are dealing with a significant increase in retail crime”.

Steve McCabe MP said: “As the chair of the all-party parliamentary group on retail crime, I welcome the announcements, as I am sure will shop workers everywhere”

Fiona Cuthbertson, Managing Director of Keystone Consulting commented: “This is a very positive step and we also welcome the fact that the Home Office are working with police forces to increase visible policing on our streets and that every reasonable line of enquiry is responded to.  In turn, we look forward to working with the police to provide them with all the information they need to successfully prosecute”.
